Urology services in secondary care are due to start the pilot implementation of GALEAS Bladder, a non-invasive urine test that can be done in a patient’s home, within secondary care diagnostic pathways for suspected bladder cancer. This update is to raise awareness in primary care and clarify what this change means for GPs.

The test will be implemented from the 18th May 2026 at University Hospitals Leicester.

What is GALEAS Bladder?

GALEAS Bladder test is a molecular diagnostic provided by Nonacus designed to detect bladder cancer from a urine sample, providing a non-invasive, sample-to-report solution.

Where is the test used?

• GALEAS Bladder is requested and managed by secondary care urology teams
• It is used after referral, within haematuria /suspected bladder cancer pathways for those patients with non-visible haematuria
• The test is sent directly to patients homes when a test order request has been made by the team in secondary care
• There is no change for the investigation of visible haematuria at the current time

What does this mean for GPs?

No change to referral criteria Continue to refer patients in line with current guidance:

• Urine samples are arranged by secondary care
• No action or additional testing is required in GP practices
• The 2WW PRISM form has been updated to ask GPs to inform patients that they will receive a urine sample pot through the post, and to ask the patient to complete this. We would really appreciate GP’s prompting the patent to return the test in a timely manner to prevent any delays to their pathway.
• The patient leaflet contains a contact number for patients should they have any queries relating to the test.
• Additional information is available on the PRISM system with patient and clinical information leaflets provided.

Why is the test being introduced?

East Midlands Cancer Alliance has funded GALEAS Bladder as a novel innovation in the urology care pathway.

GALEAS Bladder is intended to:

• Support risk stratification of referred patients
• Help prioritise access to invasive investigations
• Reduce unnecessary procedures for patients at low risk
• Support delivery of the Faster Diagnosis Standard
